In Manitoba that is.
I think the story of fly fishing in this province is a tale of the power and attraction of the past time itself. We don't have the trout streams (on which so much of fly fishing propoganda is focused) and yet we have decades of history. Folks fly fishing the most unlikely types of water (brown) and regularly persuing species, that in the outside world, would be considered 'alternate' (bass and pike), or more the focus of gear/bait anglers (walleye) or just plain odd (Catfish, Drum).
My best guess, though, places it at a minor miracle. Adding up the numbers of board members (I am constantly trimming the roster to reflect this), the MFFA numbers, Troutfest numbers and allowing for overlap I would put the number of 'active' fly fishers at less than 300. IN a province of over 1½ million this is a small number. But we have a lot of fish, water and all the strange looks to ourselves.
