Fly Fishing for Pike
Manitoba Pike Fly Fishing
Locally everyone is talking about our aerated pothole lakes that seem to grow big trout. They call it ‘world class’ but the majority of my clients from abroad want to come to Manitoba to catch their first pike.
Trout are everywhere in the world. They are easy to make and stock. Pike, on the other hand need cold water and are hard to find below the 49th parallel. Sure they have them, but they get scarce as we go south and they go deep sooner in the season leaving them out of the range of many fishers and fly fishers in particular.
Now the real big spring and summer pike that Manitoba is famous for are found in the far north. The downsize to that is that those lodges haven’t a clue on how to deal with fly fishermen. Many a fly rodder has come back sorely disappointed in being forced to use spinning rods from an over populated boat ‘just to catch a fish’. If you are a dedicated fly fisher, this seems like a colossal waste of time and money.
But if you want to catch a pike on the fly of small to medium size (20″- 40″) then a trip with us is an affordable option. We have even had clients who were stopping over on their way north, book a trip to guarantee they got a pike on the fly.
